Scary hours

Dear praying friends,

Amy wrote that last e-mail/blog-post here in Trujillo from our apartment while in labor. Shortly after sending that letter a tiny, fully formed, lifeless little boy was born. We thought that the difficulties were over but in reality they were just beginning. Amy bled all night, got weaker and weaker, fainted a few times and then went into convulsions.

I woke up the neighbor and we hauled Amy down four flights of stairs to the car and then on to the maternal clinic. When we arrived her pulse was way down and they thought she might need a blood transfusion. The big problem was that the placenta had not been expelled which was causing her to lose more and more blood. She went into the surgery room and about twenty minutes later the doctor came out saying that we had made it just in time.

In the end she didn't need a blood transfusion and now her hemoglobin count is back up. Presently Amy is fast asleep at the clinic and gaining her strength back. Please pray for a fast recovery and for no further complications. We thank the Lord that this did not happen in the jungle where things would have been more difficult and for God's protection during these last few scary hours.

Baby

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

“The Lord gives and the Lord takes away, blessed be the name of the Lord” (Job 1:21). The Lord has glorified Himself many times by providing for us and giving us good things... This time God has chosen to glorify Himself by bringing pain into our life and taking away something we longed to have. God has decided to take away the baby that we were so elated about adding to our family. Amy was 3 and a half months along in her pregnancy and she was starting to show, so we thought it was safe to announce to everyone about this exciting expansion plan.

Yesterday Amy and I went to see the OB/GYN and while looking at the baby on the ultrasound the doctor couldn't find the heartbeat. After double-checking with another ultrasound it was confirmed that the baby had died within the last few days. It's surprising how quickly we had gotten attached to a little baby that we never even met. Please pray for us, especially for Amy at this difficult time. God is sovereign. He knows why He does what he does. Blessed be His holy name!

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Every single one of us was born, has lived, and one day, unless the Lord comes first, we'll all die. It's absolutely certain. Eighty some odd years isn't all that long either. We're here for a short time, given a measured out life, and presented with only one really important choice. Based on what we decide, we live out the remainder of our days either in love with Jesus, rejecting and ignoring Him or in dread fear of Him. When our appointed hour comes and we cross that finish line, what will people say about our life? What will God say?

He's all done with this world of tears. Our uncle Bert Elliot is with the Lord! Many, many will have stories for years to come about Uncle Bert's life. How he loved them, helped them, or showed them Jesus. Many are the tears that are still to be shed though, because we will all miss him very much. The man who looked so much like and lived so close to Jesus finally gets to see Him face to face! If we're sad today it's only because we have to wait to see him again. Truly our hearts are glad at the reunion that is happening in heaven right now. When asked a few minutes ago if he could imagine what Uncle Bert might be experiencing right now, without skipping a beat Josiah said, “Yep, gold roads.” :)

For days now, we've all been waiting with him for his appointed hour. As a little friend of mine said, for Uncle Bert it was like waiting in a really long line to get ice cream. Uncle Bert loved ice cream. :) Now that he's where his heart's desire is, the rest of us will have to figure out what life here looks like without him. There will be a service this evening and another tomorrow before the burial. Please pray for our dear Aunt Colleen, for peace and comfort and that the Lord would show Himself ever closer and dearer to her heart in the days to come. Pray also for the church here to respond profoundly to what the Lord would have us all learn in the upcoming weeks through the passing of our dear brother.

Dear praying friends,

On Friday February 3rd Javen, Cullen, Christopher Mattix, Aaron Godfrey and I set out on a beautiful 17 hour driving trek to our jungle town of Tarapoto.

When we arrived we had a great time visiting with the brothers, preaching the Word and getting a better look at the property we are trying to buy.

Sunday night we got to bed at about 2 a.m and then were up again at 4 a.m ready to head for Yurimaguas where Chris and I taught at a Capacitacion Biblica all week. Each day I taught 2 hours of eschatology and 2 hours of evangelism.

Wednesday night I preached open air in the main square, Thursday night I shared in a home Bible study, Friday night I preached in a rural church, Saturday night I preached at a Vacation Bible school for kids, Sunday morning I preached in the Yurimaguas central church and Sunday night we were back in Tarapoto where I preached in our assembly there.

It was a real whirlwind of activities but a great time of fellowship and mutual encouragement. We thank the Lord that He protected us along the way from many potential dangers and allowed us to be useful instruments in His hands.

John Westley said: "You have nothing to do but to save souls. Therefore spend and be spent in this work. And go not only to those that need you, but to those who need you most.... It is not your business to take care of this or that society; but to save as many souls as you can; to bring as many sinners as you possibly can to repentance."

It's official!

we're expanding! ;)

A few busy weeks

Dear friends and family,

The last few weeks have been pretty busy for us here in Trujillo with “Capacitacion Biblica”, Child Evangelism Fellowship and the Bible institute all in full swing. In the midst of all the action we have had a very welcome visit from fellow missionary and friend, Chris Mattix from Bolivia. Our kids have especially had a great time hanging out with him and he has been a blessing to everyone here.

In the classroom Chris taught the book of Acts and a course on “discipleship” while I had a really great time teaching Genesis 1-11. It was an excellent couple of weeks full of study as these key Peruvian leaders took about 7 hours of class each day. Added to the studies, the students had to do some practical work also as I took them to minister in the outlying villages, work in the orphanage, preach in the drug rehab center and do some street evangelism. Please pray for us as Chris and I gear up to go do pretty much the same thing with a module of classes in the jungle town of Yurimaguas next week.

Friends and Family,

Last week I packed 12 brothers into our big and awesome van and went up the pan-american highway dropping off small missions teams in different villages along the way. Each team did lots of evangelism, visitation, and bible teaching. My team went furthest north to a little town called “Pacanga”. For two days we passed out tracts, preached and tried to encourage the brethren. It was a great time of fellowship, ministry and interesting experiences.

After a long day of evangelism and then a long evening meeting with the church we were happy to sit down to a late supper of savory donkey meat and rice. Finally at about 1 a.m we got to bed and were hoping to get some quality rest but we found that the mosquitos were unbearable to sleep with. The brother with whom we were staying decided to take care of the problem by lighting off a smoke bomb in our bedroom. The thick cloud of smoke got rid of the mosquitos real quick..... but I'm not sure that the burning sensation we had in our throats and consequent coughs all night was much better than the pesky blood suckers.... At any rate, it was a memorable experience.

Bert Elliot

Dear friends and family,

Bert Elliot's life on earth is coming to an end. Some might see that as "bad news" but with him, I see it differently.  He's someone that has run well … I mean REALLY well! ….. This life was not normal! Bert didn't waste any of it! And now, after 87 years of perseverance for God's glory,...... he's almost to the finish line! It's an amazing thing to see one of God's extraordinarily faithful servants arrive at home! (“Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints!”).  This long and full life has been all about victory! Soon he will hear those great words: “Well done good and faithful servant!”

The crowd went wild in Denver when Tim Tebow threw that overtime TD to beat the Steelers two weeks ago..... but with Bert we're talking about a whole other level. We're not talking about a game.... This is the real life and the real death of one of God's hero's! What will the crowd in heaven do when Bert Elliot bursts through those “the gates of splendor”?

I was able to have the great honor of spending a few nights with Bert this week. He was awake and restless for most of the time both of the nights that I was there. When he talked he strained hard to get out his whispered requests. He repeatedly wanted to stand up and then to sit back down. Several times he asked to have one of his legs moved, and then to have it put back. Often he begged us to take his clothes off and then to put them back on again. It was difficult to see him struggling with the pain and confusion but at the same time it was amazing to see him look to Christ in the midst of this trail. A few times he started to cry saying: “it hurts”. Then he'd whisper: “but God is so good”.

I prayed and read from the scriptures for long periods of time and every once in a while Bert would force a whispered: “Amen brother!”  He would nod and almost smile when I reminded him about precious people and places in Oregon, in the Amazon, and in the Andes mountains. It was a really special time for me as he kept taking my hand and putting it on his head and then on his shoulder and then his head again. Praise the Lord for this man who is such an encouragement to many even in his last days.

Open air meeting

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Last night a group of us from “Capacitacion Biblica” went out to preach in the main square of Trujillo. At first the police tried to kick us out but when I presented the official paper work and permission that I got from the municipality they let us proceed. It worked out great to have the police involved because they drew a lot of attention and people started coming from everywhere to see what was going on. Myself and three other brothers preached, one group performed a drama and all the while we did some intermittent singing. We were also able to give out lots of tracts and N.T's to those that wanted them. It was an exciting time that ended with many great one on one conversations about Christ's love for sinners.

C.H Spurgeon said: “If sinners will be damned, at least let them leap to hell over our bodies. And if they will perish, let them perish with our arms about their knees imploring them to stay. If hell must be filled, at least let it be filled in the teeth of our exertions, and let no one go there unwarned and un-prayed for.”

Please pray that God would give us boldness and that as His word continues to spread many people would “become obedient to the faith” (Acts 6:7).

Eleven years

Dear friends and family,

It is January 11th! Eleven years ago yesterday we arrived in Peru! Amy and I were 23 and 24 years old, we had 2 little kids, we knew very little Spanish and knew nothing about missions. Now we are slightly older, we have a few more kids, we've picked up a bit of Spanish and we have learned a tad more about missions. We have lived and worked in the mountains, on the coast and in the jungle regions of Peru. God has taught us many things through many experiences as we have tried to be a witness for Christ in this great land of the Incas.

We have been so blessed by the many unique opportunities that God has given us. Over the years I have been able to preach the gospel in our home, in churches, in jails, in orphanages, in hospitals, in universities, in buses, in primitive villages, in the inner city, on the streets, on the trails, on boats, on the radio, standing in rivers, and standing on mountain tops. There is nothing more exciting than trying to win souls and make God's name great among the nations!

While my life these past 11 years has been full of public ministry Amy has been behind the scenes supporting me and keeping our family sane:) She has, and continues to, nurture and educate our big family while investing immeasurably in the next generation. I am so blessed to have married a woman that has embraced the high calling and ministry of being a wife and mother! There aren't many of those left today.

God has blessed us and provided for us in so many ways. We are so thankful to Him for the life that He has given us and we want to make the most of it for His glory. “Only one life to live, soon twill pass, only what's done for Christ will last.”

Micah, for the Tuttle's
