Amy has kept you all updated on my health and now I guess I should give you a personal update to let you know about the last week and how I'm coming along now..... After this, we just need to stop talking about it :)

- Lord willing, tonight we travel by bus to Lima (8hrs).
- Tomorrow we'll go to the US embassy and find out the status of the passports.
- Wednesday we'll work on Micah's Peruvian document.
- Thursday we'll pick that up and fly to the US!
- Pray with us that all will go smoothly and that we will in fact be able to travel as a family...
- We've had some serious stomach sickness this last week, please pray that we'd be well for travel.

On Monday morning Bria embarked on a four day trip with me down the Huallaga river to visit four different villages. It was her first time going on a trip like this and so she was extremely excited even while Amy and I were a bit nervous. Two Peruvian brothers accompanied us and were very careful to help me watch over Bria's every move. She had lots of fun being the jungle princess with her three knights in shining armor, they being ready to fight off the snakes, jaguars and tarantulas at any given moment.
There was quite a commotion in each village when they saw this white American princess enter into their forgotten corner of the world. Bria handed out tracts, showed the evange-cube to everyone and sang with me at the church meetings. Each night I preached open air and all kinds of people came out to listen (I'm not sure if they came out to listen to the gospel or to see Bria... :).
In one village there was some kind of an epidemic of eye infections, as lots of the kids had puss in their eyes. When Bria saw the disease, disorder and dirtiness in this village she was quite alarmed thinking that she too might get sick. It was a good opportunity for me to explain to her that we need to try to love the people, be willing to do hard things for the Lord, persevere in difficult moments and trust God that he will take care of us. After having prayed together she felt better and in the end we made it out of that village without any eye problems.
In all it was a great trip. We were able to preach the gospel and encourage the brethren in each village. Bria was able to experience what life is like in the amazonian villages and we thank the Lord that we came through relatively healthy. We are suffering from numerous bug bites and chiggers but I'm confident that we'll heal quickly. Thank you for your prayers.

Just a quick note, as we know that you all are busy people...
Protests:
The mototaxistas have let up on their strike giving the government a week or so to resolve the problem! The natives continue to be restless, but we've heard there's a meeting in Lima today hopefully with a resolution coming in the next days. Chicken prices are still through the roof! And we were SO glad to get out of the house today for the first time in 5 days!! :)
Health:
With open roads, we were able to take Micah to the hospital to confirm that he does have Dengue. The doctor said that was good news because the alternative was something that has a tendency to go on for a longer time. My dizziness seems to have disappeared for the time being! Yay! Praise the Lord!
Travel:
The airport is now open and flights are available if we end up needing to go with that option... just so costly. But preferably, this week the road will clear, and we'll jump at the first chance to drive to Trujillo. We're hoping the car won't complain. We have things that we need to get in order there... particularly, Sam, our poor orphan dog. Though we've heard from friends that he is doing just fine ;) After a week or two in Trujillo, we hope to be back here again until July (IBEM in Trujillo).
So there you have it, your prayers have been effective, and we are super thankful for the reprieve!

PS. Below are some pictures of a trip we took to Laguna Azul on our family day last week... probably where Micah got sick?!

"...though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith...may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ." ~1Pet1:6-7
Well, the title "various trials", pretty much sums up the last month and a half to a tee. We've had hundreds of little tests and some big ones, we have passed some with flying colors and some not so brilliantly. The point is, that all these slight momentary afflictions are preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.
For that we PRAISE the LORD!
A few trials to praise the Lord for :)
We've been visited by the dengue bug. Micah has spent the good part of the last four days in bed with a high fever and bone-break nerve pain. It's been pretty tough but we're hoping that, under the influence of meds, he is on the mend. At the same time, I've had vertigo (my head spins for no apparent reason and I end up super nauseous). The bug might have taken up residence in my ear, for all I know!
Our upcoming trip to Trujillo has been delayed indefinitely (we were planning to leave yesterday - of course we also have to be in a state to make the 20 hour drive ;). But, as of now, we're completely trapped in Tarapoto by a group of indigenous people protesting and manning the roadblocks to all entrances/exits of the city for the last week and a half. To add insult to injury, the motocarristas (taxi drivers), have decided to strike at the same time so that no one can move even inside the city (they've threatened to damage cars that attempt to drive about - and it's too far to walk with lots of little kids to most places from where we live). It was already getting pretty bad before the taxistas started their strike. Now many in the city are at risk of running out of food, most of the stores and all the markets are closed, and one can't even get to the hospital. A few minutes ago, they even shut down the airport. It is supposed to last through this week, so unless the miraculous happens, we will most likely miss the National Congress of full-time workers and leaders (May 13-16)... along with any elders/leaders from this part of the country (Yurimaguas) that haven't flown or left by car already.
So over this last month, in a house with no furniture, facing serious health issues, with mosquito bites galore, with a bathroom & kitchen that emptied sewage into the backyard, bats coming in, high temperatures, incessant rain and the resulting mud, all the while keeping up on pastoral visits, preaching/teaching multiple times a week, facing immaturity issues among the believers, etc., etc.,... We do NOT complain, but PRAISE the Lord for the opportunity to grow our FAITH.
Pray that in all things we would welcome trials as a test of the genuineness of our faith and obedience. Pray that HIS glory might be revealed in us as we continue to be tested in various trials. It is not an easy task.
On His grace we're dependent
To reflect His glory resplendant.
So we learn to be content,
And this that our souls may live.

Praise the Lord with us! Dorcas is well. She and her dad, Mariano are staying with us here in Tarapoto this weekend on their way back home from Lima. All roads, rivers, airports are blocked to their town because of a strike. Please pray that the Lord would open the way for them to get back home, they've been 3 weeks away (remember that Mariano's wife stayed at home with their newborn son - 2 1/2 months old, and other daughter).
Her family has really felt your prayers and are truly thankful for the Lord's healing. Everything seems perfect. The doctors suspected leukemia, heart trouble, and/or other problems, but the tests have ruled everything out!! Yay! Praise the Lord. They will follow up with more tests in a month to confirm.
I just wanted to let you all know that your prayers have been effective.

Also, the technician installed internet in our house this morning (another miracle ;) - they said it would be at least a month!), after less than a week. So... we'll be able to be better in touch with the world and fill you in on all that's happening here.
By His Grace,
the Tuttles in Tarapoto

Just a quick note to let you all know that we are alive! We arrived
last night at 5. We looked at a couple houses, and then went to the
meeting last night. This morning, we have pretty much decided on one,
we will talk with the landlord in a few minutes (not the furnished one -
since they require a one year contract).
Also, we know that many of you have prayed for Dorcas, our
friends´daughter and are wondering how she is doing. We have not
heard anything since I last wrote, which we hope means good news.
Mariano (her dad), didn´t have a cell phone or any other phone still
as of the time we left Trujillo. We will try to find out more soon to
give an update on her.
Thank you for praying,
the Tuttles

Hey there all,
Yesterday we heard from Dorcas' dad that she is stablized! She's not out of trouble, but her body's defenses have kicked in at least a little and her parents are able to relax ever so slightly. We wanted to contribute to their expenses and they don't even have their own account to make a deposit into, so they are borrowing someone's bank account! It is so foreign an idea to us not to have a bank account isn't it? We thought it was sweet. :) Please keep praying for her.
Plans are also falling into place for our trip. According to the Ministry of Transportation the road closure rumor is myth. So, we continue to plow ahead with plans and hope to have things together by next week to travel. We are anxious to see several houses that our friends there have found for rent/to buy. One they said is a missionary's house that has recently moved and even has all the furniture! Wow, wouldn't that be a blessing. God is generous... and WE are His children, praises, praises!
Amy for all

Friends,
Please be in prayer the next few days for the following items:
Most urgently, we ask you to pray right now for God's healing for our dear little friend Dorcas. A friend and co-laborer just called us to ask for prayer for his little 5 year old daughter Dorcas. She has had an excessive fever that they just cannot get to come down. They've ruled out malaria and dengue, but the doctors can't figure out what she has besides it being in her blood. The word cancer was mentioned, but we have no details yet. They will fly her to Lima in the morning to see what there is to be done. The family lost one son a few years ago (he died near his first birthday) and only 2 months ago they welcomed a new baby boy, they have 3 girls. Please pray for a sense of the Lord's sweet comforting presence and of course for complete healing. As would be expected it is weighing heavily on the mother's heart.
Secondly, and not AS important, but still pretty important is the following...
Many of you know that we have been planning an extended trip to the jungle, April - June. For the last several months, we have been praying, and working in that direction. Well, this last rainy season, there was a larger than normal landslide on the only road to that city (there are landslides ALL the time, but apparently this was a bigger one). We have recently heard rumors that they will be closing the road to only commercial traffic for the next three months, starting next week. This could be not true, or if true it either means that God is closing the door, or He is saying, hurry up! Today when we were talking with our friends in Tarapoto, they hadn't heard about any road closure, but they had found a great house for us to rent near the church. So, please pray for clear guidance in these next days as we make this decision.
Dependent on Grace,
the Tuttles

Alright, now that I/we have been sick so long, I've forgotten what it is like to write a normal blog entry!
At first glance, I cannot think of a thing to write.
So... today everyone is feeling alright (definition of alright = not vomiting, not in bed in agony, no fevers). Several of us still have recurring stomach aches, but overall, we're doing much better.
Tomorrow, our friends arrive. That will be neat, as long as we don't make them sick!
Consequently, because of our visitors, we have a pretty busy week planned for this next week. I'll have to blog about it as we go along.
Dearest Beloved Micah and I discussed the upcoming months last night and put some finishing touches on our plans. As always, looking beyond next week takes some serious concentration and decision-making skills! We realized we have (after our guests leave) only 3 1/2 weeks to pack up our house and move all our things into storage (we'll get rid of some stuff). After that we will take a two week trip to Trujillo for the Bible Institute. After that we will be in Lima for a week. After that we will fly to the States where we basically will be living out of suitcases again for 3 more weeks, while driving around the U.S.! When we counted them up, we realized we will be living out of suitcases for something insane like 5 or 6 weeks! ...with four little kids! Oh my. Needless to say, last night I felt a little bit daunted by that. But I woke up this morning. And I realized... This is my life! How can I complain?! It is how the Lord has chosen to bless me! Besides, if I worry about tomorrow it only serves to ruin today. So, be happy, self, I say, and be grateful for what the Lord has given you today!

It is a matter of attitude. I had to check on mine often. I am actually experiencing a different kind of homesickness from my family back home. Plus the fact that after 2 months, we are still a squatter here in my in laws. Not very comfortable and I am getting anxious everyday when we could move to our own place. But I do have a husband who still adores me and is really working hard. You're right, your post reminds me that this is the life that God has choose for me to bless. Great is thy faithfulness, O God! Hi, Amy. You've been sick, and I've been moving. All settled now. WHEW!!! That is a job. I totally understand about the living out of suitcase and the transition issues for the kids. We're going through the transition AGAIN of a new city. It's hard. God has been saying over and over to me the very same verse you quoted. NEW EVERY MORNING! That's a good thing because I think I used them all up yesterday... :-) And take it one day at a time. When we plan too much, it's overwhelming. At least for me it is. Will you be able to blog from the road? Hope so. |

...albeit painfully :) I have been dutifully taking my turn at being sick, and although I am somewhat better than before, I am wondering if it will ever end.
Micah got sick AGAIN. He was in bed all afternoon yesterday and miserable through the night. And now GuerillaGuy is groaning again.
PLEASE KEEP PRAYING!!
I have debated whether or not to keep blogging about this, but as there has been little else to write about... and there are people who do pray... and well, I have to let you all know we are not dead!
Okay, so I've got to be going now.
Back to bed.

*(This post was originally posted at Manifold Musings of a Missionary Mom, which has since moved to A Pilgrim's Project) I'm tired because it's late. I'm sick because it seems to be my lot in life for this week. Afterall, it is my turn... It all started almost 2 weeks ago with dear Micah being agonizingly sick, and then Javen with a very bad stomach ache. From there it passed to Cullen who has been vomiting for the past several days. Just tonight Bria came down with a fever and is feeling quite crummy. I guess it is my turn now. I won't describe my symptoms for those of you weak of heart. So, I apologize that this post doesn't not mark the turn of the tide for the more cheerful side of this blog.* This sickness stuff surely has stifled our regular life/school/ministry activities... I've started to wonder if it is not some kind of spiritual attack. I'm not sure how those kind of things actually work. But you can keep on praying for us :) The Lord, of course, remains faithful. I guess we may be headed back to the doctor's office afterall... (see my last post for details about medical care)

Well, the results are in.
Medical attention is beyond amazing here in PERU. It actually is enough to drive me crazy. I can't believe I actually had a baby here!!!!!! Our fourth, LittlestBubby is Peruvian/American, and was born in the clinic where we go for everything medical related. Besides the 5-6 doctor's offices, there are 3 hospital-like rooms downstairs w/ 6 beds and an operating room. (I wish I had pictures!) It really is the only clinic within 5 hours that is anywhere near N.American standards.
When someone needs to go to the doctor, they cannot set an appointment; it is first come first served. The pediatrician's hours for example are 8am - 2pm and some days he works 5pm - 8pm and on other days 8pm- 9pm. (I'm not sure how anyone is supposed to keep track, but I digress...) So, depending on when you show up and how many people are ahead of you, you could spend over an hour with lots of other sick people in close quarters... just waiting to be seen!!!! We have tried to figure out when the least busy hours are and have had some luck. If we can manage to be first there in the morning that is usually best. But with 4 kiddies living in this less than developed city we take MANY trips to the doctor for various problems and spend WAY too much time at the doctor's office. We've tried to talk them into setting appointments, but unfortunately, they are right that the majority of the time it wouldn't work in this culture, where people are always running late, or changing without notice, etc, etc. Because Micah has been sick lately as well, he's taken the kids with him to be seen together, so I actually don't have much to complain about lately... I'm just not really excited to have to wait so long to find out with PrettyPinkPrincess what she had a month ago or might still have and possibly catching any bugs that we don't already have.
Okay, there's my rant for the day. :) I should learn to be thankful for the trials in patience! Amy |

Well, we're pretty sure that Micah and eldest child have Giardiasis. Their symptoms are diarrhea, severe stomach cramps and fatigue. Not fun. And, tomorrow's Micah's birthday. :(
Please pray for us!
It is possible that the rest of us could have it already or get it as it is VERY contagious. We are hoping that won't happen.

I'd never heard of it before, but only he and the other Scout leader got it, none of the kids or any of the family! I will be praying and especially that no one else gets sick! My kids are passing around the stomach flu. Yesterday, I had two kids throw up on the kitchen floor within a minute of eachother. YUK! |
